Richard (Dick) Mills

“I have been on quite a few African wildlife safaris arranged by Dick Mills, and all have been very successful in every  way.  There have been several to Kenya and Tanzania, and one safari went to Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.   Dick Mills has a great advantage over other travel agents arranging African safaris because he knows Africa exceptionally well.  He knows the wildlife, when and where best to see them, the lodges and accommodation details, and he knows the best guides and local agents to achieve the most rewarding safari experience.  I have worked with Dick Mills for many years, and I can recommend him strongly and without reservation.”

“This is my third trip with World Discovery Safaris and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The experience was beyond my expectations. We experienced professional guides, excellent accommodations, and thorough planning of the itinerary. All information concerning the registration and important information was well detailed. All questions were handled as requested and in a timely manner. Our naturalist guides were extremely knowledgeable and expressed their knowledge of Africa clearly and with passion. It was an absolutely amazing trip. Seeing the multitudes of wildlife in the natural habitat during migration was breathtaking. This is a trip I will remember for a lifetime.

“World Discovery Safaris organized and arranged the itinerary for a trip to the Galapagos Islands for our University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) Study Away Biology Class. The experience was excellent in all ways and exceeded our expectations. The accommodations, the food and our boat crew were superb. Our naturalist guides were extremely friendly and were knowledgeable about both the physical habitat and the fauna and flora of the Islands and surrounding waters. Our itinerary took us to many different and exciting locations to view the spectacular wildlife close up and personal. As a leader of more than twenty Study Away courses over the years, this was one of the best wildlife experiences that I have had. It was truly a trip of a lifetime for most of our students.”

“The safari was amazing! It was more incredible than I had ever imagined. Our guides Tim and Ken made it an experience that I will never forget. In fact I believe my world will be forever changed because of the journey. Their knowledge, excitement and curiosity was infectious. They are exceptional people! Thank you for rearranging the scenario for the last day. Flying into Nairobi was key in lieu of the car ride, so thank you so much for taking the time and coordination to make that happen.”

“We began planning our safari experience nearly a year before leaving, and Dick Mills was most helpful in working out the details. We exchanged many emails in that 10 month period, and he was always quick to respond to my queries. I initially felt that the cost was higher than I had anticipated, and the accommodations more luxurious than I had intended, but my companions and I ended up feeling that the experience was decidedly worth all that we spent. We were particularly pleased with our safari guide, and had the confidence of knowing that he could be trusted because of Dick’s history in working with his employer. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Masai Mara and all the plants and animals there, and he was a very careful and experienced driver – a critical skill on Kenyan roads! The safari was a truly wonderful experience!

“World Discovery Safaris arranged my trip to the Galapagos Islands in May 2013, and the trip was every bit as fabulous as I imagined it would be – and then some! All the trip details were addressed: airline flights, transfers, overnight stays, meals, etc. and I could not have asked for a better pre-trip information packet – it was very thorough. The boat accommodations were superb, the staff courteous, the naturalist guides extremely knowledgeable and the meals delicious.

The Galapagos Islands were a naturalist’s paradise. I went there to experience the bird life but came away with a much deeper appreciation of all the wildlife the islands have to offer. While the bird diversity is somewhat less than other birding destinations I have visited, the sheer number of birds was awe-inspiring! After one day I knew I needed to recalibrate my definition of a “good day of birding!” As incredible and colorful as the bird life was, the underwater realm was even more spectacular! The cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current sustain a myriad of colorful species of fish, mammals, reptiles and countless marine invertebrates. When one tired of looking at the birds and other land-based wildlife, a snorkeling adventure into underwater world beckoned – a waterproof camera is just as important for capturing the colorful seascapes!

Amateur photographers have a field day with the multiple opportunities for close-up views of the abundant wildlife, and natural history buffs will delight in following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin. Seeing and experiencing the archipelago as he did is the ultimate in experiential learning! I highly recommend this trip to anyone who desires a travel adventure that will remain in his or her memories for years to come.”

“Christina & Richard,

I just wanted to thank you both for planning and organizing one of the best trips/vacations I have ever taken. Everything about the trip was above and beyond my expectations. I know these overseas trips are expensive, so you tend to expect a lot, but believe me I feel like it was an unbelievable trip in terms of both experience and value.

Brian Jorg was an excellent trip leader and did everything you’d expect from someone in that position and more. You couldn’t ask for a better trip leader (and roommate). At every turn he made sure that people were taken care of at the airport (me included – twice), at the hotels & lodges, and in general along ever step of the way. It was a bonus that he also knew the name and info on every bird and animal we saw. Also, I have to mention that it was because of Brian that I found out about the safari (through a couple of photography classes he offered). I’ll be interested to know about any trips he leads for the zoo in the future.

I can’t speak highly enough about the guides and the lodging that we had on the trip. Again, much better than I even expected. The accommodations and the staff at each camp were great. The food and beverage selections were also good. I do want to specifically mention Ultimate Safaris and their two guides Michael and Perez. These guys were extremely knowledgeable, nice, and really spoiled us the first week of our trip. Each evening they told us what to expect the next day and there never any bad surprises. They certainly made sure we got the most out of each day – truly super guys.

There really isn’t anything that I’d complain about. All the transportation arrangements were great (air and ground). A big thanks to Sohail Khan for setting up all the flights. For me personally there was one brief hiccup when a lady at South African Airlines said I wasn’t in the system for the flight from JNB to Windhoek. Luckily that was resolved relatively quickly and Brian was right there to make sure it was. Lastly, I’ll say that flight from Mapula Lodge to Maun in a small 5-person aircraft was a lot of fun, and one of the smoothest flights I’ve been on, even with the dirt airstrip.

Again I can’t thank you two and the entire network of zoo employees, safari companies, the CCF, lodges, and guides enough for a spectacular trip – one that I will always remember.”
